Madhubala who had millions of fans including Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto

Few people know that Pakistan's Bhutto family used to have a luxurious mansion near the beach in Mumbai's Worli area. Between 1954 and 1958, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, often came to stay in this house while his entire family lived in Pakistan.

This is the period when the shooting of the movie 'Mughal Azam' was going on in Mumbai. Naushad remembers that the song 'Mohe Panghat Pe Nand Lal Zag Gaya Re' of this film was being shot.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto loved this song and Madhubala so much that he used to come to the sets everyday to watch the shooting of this song. He was very serious about marrying Madhubala and once revealed his intention to Madhubala during lunch. But in response he got Madhubala's refusal.

At that time no one could have imagined that one day Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto would become the President and later the Prime Minister of Pakistan. When the song was being shot, Mughal Azam's choreographer Lacchu Maharaj needed a dancer who could convey the lyrics of the song through facial expressions and hand movements.

Madhubala was not a classical dancer but she worked hard for this song. Lacchu Maharaj taught him Kathak dance for months.

It should be remembered that Chinese Prime Minister Chou Enlai, Pakistan's famous poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz and famous Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossolini and Lawrence of Arabia director David Lane were also among those who watched the shooting of 'Mughal Azam'.

Madhubala always had a habit of being on time on the sets. Many times she used to reach the set before the director of the film while Marilyn was always 'notorious' as an actress who came very late to the set.

Noted film journalist BK Karanjia writes in his autobiography 'Counting My Blessings' that 'When I told Madhubala's father Attaullah Khan about this offer, he refused to send Madhubala to Hollywood. That they do not know how to eat with a fork and knife.'

Once Menu Mumtaz described the beauty of Madhubala and said that 'Her complexion was so fair that if she ate betel nut, its red color could be clearly seen coming down her throat.'

Similarly, Shammi Kapoor also said that 'if she even drinks water, we can clearly see it going down her throat.'

Devika Rani named Mumtaz Jahan Begum as 'Madhu Bala'
Madhubala was born on 14th February 1933 i.e. on Valentine's Day in Delhi. Her childhood name was Mumtaz Jahan Begum.

Mumtaz was the fifth among her 11 siblings. He entered the world of films at the age of nine. His first film was 'Basant'. After doing this film, she came back to Delhi, then she got a call from Bombay from Amiya Chakraborty who wanted to give her a role in her film 'Jowar Bhata'.

She moved back to Bombay but due to some reasons she could not get the role of Jowar Bhata, but her father decided to stay in Bombay.

Famous actress Devika Rani was very impressed after seeing his hard work. He gave him a new name Madhubala. In the year 1948, she got the role of Sahnayaka in the film 'Singhar' opposite Suraya. Gradually her fame started to increase and she started getting many roles as a heroine.

Famous director Kedar Sharma signed her in the film 'Neel Kamal' opposite Raj Kapoor.

Career went ahead with the movie 'Mahal'
The film that brought Madhubala national recognition was 'Mahal'. It is a story of unfulfilled love that continues from one birth to another. It had been many years since Latha had entered the Indian film world by then, but her song 'Aayga Aaanwala' in the film took her to the top of playback singing.

It was necessary for this film that its heroine should be extraordinarily beautiful. Kamal Amruhi chose Madhubala for the film who was not a big name in the film world till then. The film company Bombay Talkies was determined to cast Suraya for the role, but Kamal Amrohi was adamant about his decision.

At that time Madhubala was only 16 years old while her hero Ashok Kumar was twice her age i.e. 32 years old. Madhubala carried the entire film on her shoulders and the film broke all the old box office success records.

In the year 1950, Madhubala's health suddenly deteriorated. After examination and investigation, it was found that he had a hole in his heart. At that time, heart surgery was considered a difficult operation in India. Madhubala hid her illness from everyone and continued to work in films.

In 1954, while she was shooting for the film 'Bhat Din Hoye' in Chennai, she vomited blood and the news of her illness spread far and wide. While casting for the film 'Mughal Azam', Asif invited several problems simultaneously.

Rajkumar Keswani writes in his book 'Dastan-e Mughal Azam' that 'Prithviraj Kapoor was fighting with many diseases at that time. Due to heart disease, Madhubala was also bound by many restrictions. In one particularly long segment of the film, Madhubala had to wear heavy real iron chains. When Madhubala was to be shot in jail for the scene of 'Bey Kis Pe Kuram Korkee Sarkar Medina', the doctors had strict instructions to avoid lifting weights under any circumstances. But Madhubala allowed him to shoot. Madhubala's body was certainly helpless but his intentions were firm.

Mughal Azam was the last film of Madhubala's career. The film was earlier offered to Nargis but she didn't sign the film as she was in the Raj Kapoor camp at the time and had a grudge against Dilip Kumar. Then Nutan was offered this film but he also refused to act in this film.

When Madhubala signed the film, she was only 20 years old. It took eight years to make this film. Nadra later said that 'it was Madhubala's courage to continue playing the role for eight years despite being seriously ill.'

She looked very beautiful from the first scene to the last scene of the movie. It was the most expensive film of that time. The film was made in three languages ​​Hindi, English and Tamil. Each conversation was recorded in three languages. After the shooting of this film, so much of his film reel was wasted that at least three films could have been made from it.

The most famous scene in Mughal Azam was when Dilip Kumar touched Madhubala's lips with a feather. Subhash Ghai says that 'K Asif shot this scene very sensitively. The impact of that scene was greater than filming a direct kissing scene.' According to Mahesh Bhatt, 'It was probably the sexiest scene in Indian cinema.'

Later, Asif's wife Satara Devi said in an interview that 'There was tension on the set of Mughal Azam because there was no communication between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. Suppressed emotions came out when in one scene Dilip Kumar slapped Madhubala's cheek so hard that everyone was stunned.

Ajith says that 'everyone started wondering what will happen next? Will Madhubala walk out of the set? Will the shooting be cancelled? Before Madhubala could say anything, Asif took her to a corner and said, 'I am very happy today because it is clear that he still loves you. Only a lover would dare to do this.'

Despite her performance in Mughal Azam, the best actress award was not given to Madhubala but to Babina Rai for the film 'Ghongat'.

Madhubala and Dilip Kumar's love

In his autobiography 'The Substance and the Shadow' Dilip Kumar writes that 'I was attracted to Madhubala both as an artist and as a woman. She was a very lively and lively lady. He had no problem talking to someone as shy and introverted as me.'

But this love story could not go ahead because of Madhubala's father Attaullah Khan. His father believed that Dilip Kumar was older than Madhubala. Khadija Akbar in Madhubala's biography 'I Want to the Story of Madhubala' writes that 'Differences between Dilip Kumar and Attaullah Khan came to light during the shooting of the film 'Niya Dur'. BR Chopra cast Madhubala as the heroine for the first time in this film. When Chopra decided to shoot the film outdoors, Attaullah Khan strongly objected. BR Chopra not only replaced Madhubala with Vijanthimala but also filed a case against him for breach of contract.'

Later, the two reconciled and the case was withdrawn. Madhubala's younger sister Madhur Bhushan says that 'Dilip sir said let's get married. On this Madhubala said that I will definitely get married but first you apologize to my father. But Dilip Kumar refused to do so. My sister even asked him to come home and hug him. But Dilip Kumar did not agree to this either. From there, there was a break-up between the two of them.'

When Madhubala realized that Dilip Kumar would not marry her, she married Kishore Kumar to prove that she could marry any man, even though the two did not know each other well. .

Kishore knew about Madhubala's illness even before marriage.

In Kishore Kumar's biography 'Kishore Kumar The Ultimate Biography', Anirudh Bhattacharjee and Parthiv Dhar quote Madhubala's younger sister Madhur saying, 'As soon as the doctor told Kishore that Madhubala had very few days left to live, he sent them with a driver to a flat on Carter Road.

'He used to visit her once in four months and wouldn't even answer her phone calls. In the last days, Madhubala started wearing a gown.'

But Kishore Kumar's son Amit Kumar presented the opposite picture and said in an interview, 'I saw Madhubala for the first time at the age of ten. My father had taken a flat in Branda and started living with them.

'I used to stay with them during the holidays. When I saw her on the sets of 'Jhumru', she looked very beautiful but later she became weak.'

Later, Madhubala lived alone in Bandra. My father used to visit her every day. She used to insist that they eat with her. This meant that my father had to have dinner twice, once with Madhubala and once with my mother.'

Good behavior of Madhubala

Anil Biswas believed that there was no other woman in the film industry who was more soft-spoken and respected people than Madhubala.

Famous journalist BK Karanjia writes that 'I still remember how Madhubala used to play hide and seek with her daughter Ratan in our flat on Quetta Terrace. My daughter once craved Kumba's cream buns on Meadow Street. The next day, Madhubala sent a huge gift of cream buns to our house by the driver. '

When Dilip Kumar was getting married to Saira Bano, Madhubala sent him a message that she wanted to meet him. Madhubala was very weak when Dilip Kumar went to meet her.

He told them in a very low voice that 'Our prince has found his princess. I'm very happy.'

When Madhubala was breathing her last at Breach Candy Hospital, BK Karanjia was probably the last person to meet her.

Karanjia writes that 'Madhubala looked very beautiful even when she was in the hospital with breathing problems and an oxygen tube in her nose. He smiled at me. I took his hand in mine. We looked into each other's eyes in silence. The nurse gave me only five minutes to sit near her but Madhubala did not let go of my hand. His eyes began to fill.

'I slowly released my hand and held his hand with both hands. Then I leaned down and kissed her cool and damp forehead. Tears also came to my eyes and I immediately came out of the room. The nurse gently closed the door of Madhubala's room and gently put her hand on my shoulder. He whispered and said pray.'

The next day, 23 February 1969, i.e. the ninth day of his 36th birthday, Madhubala bid farewell to this world.

Dilip Kumar was shooting in Madras that day. By the time they reached Bombay, Madhubala had been buried. He went straight to the graveyard from the airport and offered his last rites by laying flowers on his grave
